3rd and 1 is the basis of football for me. It is the be all and end all of offense.
Football isn’t hard. It’s about two things. Heart … and physics. Heart is something you have or you don’t and what separates the chaff from the wheat. The physics part is easy. The list of things to do if you need a yard is not long. You can run or you can pass.
It should always be carried out from a heavy set, and then if so desired, can be switched to a pass or be intended as a pass, preferably with double TEs/OTs and a two-back I-formation … or whatever you fancy that is considered oldskool.
There is no need to get cute other than whether it is going to be a pass or a run. Multiple ball-handlers doing a Chinese fire drill behind the line of scrimmage – when the defense is rushing over the line looking for someone to hit – is nothing short of fucking stupid. And whatever the fuck that option to the short side of the field was where neither QB nor back seemed to know what was happening .. I never want to see again.
I understand that a line may be overwhelmed and they cannot win at the point of attack, but if you’re going to pass it, make it look like you’re running it. At least try .. that’s what play-action is for, and it’s very effective. Mis-direction is effective. But Nagy takes it to the Nth degree where we just get lost in the details.
And MT did not look like a guy who ‘hurt his hip’ last night …. he looked like guy who had just lost his job IMHO. If his hip was hurt and you need to send in #2 .. then you do it, there’s no fucking arm around the shoulder and let’s have a heart to heart. There was way more going on than that. I’m just waiting for MT to go on IR now and then the shock trade at season’s end.
Nagy can’t even bench someone properly.
I have seen enough to know that I do not, and never will believe in his abilities to lead a team to the promised land. Say what you like about Ditka, but he came in and said what he was going to do, when he was going to do it … and how. And he did it, because he had seen it from all angles and made the same walk himself at various stages of his life.
